BACK FROM CANADA!

Posted by Mizox - August 7th, 2009

I'm going to Canada, Montreal to be specific, for a week, I will post more details when I get the chance (I hope they have WiFi at that campground) EDIT! NO THEY DON'T!

EDIT!
my journal:

(all times are Eastern Daylight Time, as that is what was used there)

Sunday, August 2nd
9:58 AM: we departed about half an hour ago, no-one is on MSN except :iconaggressiveth:, and he won't talk to me. trailer is holding up well, probably cuts the gas Mileage in half. GPS with Irish accent is annoying, I preferred when it was British
10:08 AM: I sent Agg a message of laughter, he responded angrily >:3
10:50 AM: first starting to make use of our food supplies
11:04 AM: crossing from New Hampshire to Vermont
11:06 AM: crossing back into New Hampshire for food
11:11 AM: stopped for food
11:43 AM: finished eating Burger King, about to cross into Vermont, my turn to drive
12:30 PM: Dad needed a Pit stop, also getting more Diesel, the additional weight of the trailer causes the truck to burn more fuel. truck handles differently with trailer, feels more like a lumbering beast, I can feel the additional strain
1:15 PM: I am incapable of effectively driving further, so I let my dad take over, weather is worsening
3:26 PM: Entering New York state
3:29 PM: Entering Canada, no passports needed, WTF?
3:40 PM: I realize everything is in French, lol
4ish PM: Arrive at Campground, everything is in French, only 1 staff member speaks English
4:16 PM: Set up Camper
4:30 PM: there are no WiFi hotspots here
5:29 PM: going into town, looking for stuff, such as WiFi, and English speakers
5:32 PM: messing around in campground first, no English here, now I think I know what it's like for foreigners in America
7:57 PM: just ate at "Boston Pizza" based in Canada, excellent food, I highly recommend, but rather expensive, I'm glad they had and English Menu (why are they called "Boston Pizza"? Boston is in Massachusetts [wait never mind there's a Boston in Ontario as well])
8:33 PM: went to a grocery store to buy Klondike Bars, closest I could find was icecream sandwiches, didn't feel as awkward as last time, but did feel a bit unreal

Monday, August 3rd
11:00 AM: headed for Montreal, problems with the GPS, it doesn't quite recognize the address we put in, oh well, we can ask for directions when we get to Montreal
11:12 AM: Reflection on yesterday: this area is extremely similar to New England, my home, yet I cannot understand anything anyone says, I feel like an alien in my own country (even though it isn't my country)
11:27 AM: I wish they had a Sean Connery voice for the GPS, that would be EPIC!
11:47 AM: as we get close to Montreal I am noticing English on the road signs in addition to French
12:00 PM: in what appears to be downtown Montreal, looks pretty much like every other city I've ever been in ever
12:25 PM: we are in a shopping mall: "Place Montreal Trust" we are parked in the basement, we hope to find the tours soon, lol they sell undergarments in the food court
streets around mall: Rue Ste-Catherine, Avenue McGill College, Rue Mansfield
12:58 PM: been looking for Dorchester Square for a while now, that's where the tours are based, got a tip from a guy with and iPhone, we are lost in a foreign city without a map
1:06 PM: in "Centre Info Touriste" finding tourist info
1:19 PM: taking tour on Gray Line "Montreal's Double Decker" Hop-on-Hop-off thing or whatever. yes, we finally found Dorchester Square, tour guide's accent reminds me of :iconadoublea:'s (of course she does, French Canadian, Duh)
1:40 PM: moved to top of bus, fresh air, better view
2:15 PM: I hear Montreal has an "underground city" interesting...
2:41 PM: Montreal = Mount Real = Mount Royal, L O L
2:50 PM: at top of mountain, view is EPIC!
3:16 PM: done tour, heading back to mall
3:58 PM: logged in to internet using Mall's WiFi
4:50 PM: had to log out, low battery
4:57 PM: go for walk
5:04 PM: in underground city, wow
5:48 PM: depart from the mall and underground city :(
6:14 PM: we realize that Canada has more bicycle trails than us, and Canadians look healthy
8:43 PM: back in Montreal, at night it looks kinda like the city in Blade Runner
9:09 PM: at some kind of Music festival or something, audio explosion and LOL
10:44 PM: left the festival and leaving the city, GPS is giving faulty location readings, probably due to large buildings
11:06 PM: we keep missing turns, at this rate we should be back to camp by midnight, although if we keep missing turns like this we'll be back by morning
11:53 PM: Back to trailer, finally

Tuesday, August 4th
12:34 PM: headed for Fort Lennox, YAY!
reflection: we are getting 2 types of tv stations, all Analog stations are from Canada, most if not all of the Digital ones are from the USA
12:54 PM: arrived at dock, boat departs for Fort at 1:15, there seems to be alot of people from Michigan here for some reason
1:10 PM: purchased a Fudgsicle for 1 Canadian dollar and 3 USA quarters
1:14 PM: loading onto ferry
1:19 PM: arrive at the island where the fort is
2:06 PM: 2 o'clock English tour starts, YAY!
3:05 PM: Tour over, it was great, at one point the guide talked briefly to someone in French and was going to continue the tour in French but caught himself. now watching a firearm demonstration, I guess, I dunno French
3:06 PM: got bored, looked at Prison
3:40 PM: preparing to leave Fort Lennox
3:53 PM: Ferry is having Problems, gotta wait for a bit, crap
4:06 PM: Ferry is ok, just needs more fuel, it should be here shortly
4:15 PM: Ferry should be here any time now, they're taking some people across on the smaller boat, mainly the whining kids
4:41 PM: Ferry is FINALLY coming, YAY!
4:44 PM: board Ferry
4:53 PM: back on mainland
5:21 PM: buying stuff for dinner

Wednesday, August 5th
12:03 PM: buying 2 more nights at camp ground, headed for Montreal for a while
Reflection: I heard on the CBC news yesterday that Bill Clinton had gotten those reporters freed from North Korea, and today's news showed them getting off the Plane, YAY!
1:10 PM: at Saint Joseph church thingy, it's bloody Massive
1:30 PM: begin tour
2:46 PM: tour over, Brother Andre FTW
3:02 PM: this amazing bell instrument thing is played, sounds great
3:30 PM: leaving, headed for food and the Montreal Biodome
4:06 PM: at Biodome in Olympic Park
4:28 PM: finished snacking and ready to look around
6:02 PM: leaving Biodome, it was great
6:49 PM: Boston Pizza! YAY!
8:07 PM: leaving Boston Pizza, headed back to camp, I almost left my clipboard/journal in the restaurant

Thursday, August 6th
10:37 AM: watching TV from the USA side of the border, PBS, note to self: look into stress response, specifically, aggressive personality and chronic stress
food thoughts: if you go to Canada, get a box of Vachon POP, these things are over 9000% chocolate, normally I don't like chocolate much, but I love these
12:13 PM: departing for Montreal to just look around, my father decided to stay behind at the trailer, he is very tired from this week
12:37 PM: we're going to take a metro into the city rather than drive all the way, currently making plans, directions confuse me @_@
1:21 PM: at Metro station, deciding where to go
1:29 PM: on the train, going into the city, fron Longueuil to Berri-Uquam
1:36 PM: at Berri-Uqam
1:43 PM: leaving Berri-Uqam
1:47 PM: arrive at McGill
1:57 PM: Pizza Soleil, OM NOM NOM!
thoughts: the young women around here are a bit... less clothed than American women in many cases, just a bit though, mainly it's the same old stuff, or maybe it's just because I'm in a city, I dunno.
the Canadians look healthier and in better shape than Americans on average, must be all the bicycles and the better food
2:58 PM: was just in EB Games playing wii
4:46 PM: tried the 360 Demo of Sonic Unleashed, EPIC! better than the Wii version! although using X for homing attack rather than A is a strange concept to me, and the controller had low battery and kept switching off :(
5:06 PM: sent a post card to my cousins
7:06 PM: after much wandering underground we are back on the subway, yay!
9:06 PM: Back at camp, wondering about dinner

Friday, August 7th
9:49 AM: leaving the campground, trailer is packed up, everything is ready to go, my hands were covered in oil and dirt, and smelled like shit as a result of packing, I'm glad they had sinks there
9:57 AM: had to stop for a moment, turned out we left the propane turned on, and my mom bought some corn
10:00 AM: we have gotten close enough to the border for me to get a phone signal which isn't "Roaming", YAY!
10:16 AM: at border, awaiting crossing
10:18 AM: guy asks us questions, asks for passports, standard stuff
10:19 AM: Back in the U.S. of A!
11:00 AM: just got gasoline for the truck, about to get on I-89
11:27 AM: we just took a pit stop, my turn to drive
1:35 PM: just crossed the border into New Hampshire and stopped for food, my driving shift is up. I noticed some road with a red tint at 12:20, 12:34, and 12:40-12:50, started seeing mirages at 12:53, still on I-89
2:47 PM: leaving Denny's, had the Chicken strips, good stuff
3:01 PM: on the road again
4:13 PM: after a bit of sleep I awoke to an argument, apparently we missed a turn and my mom and dad don't agree, so my mom started driving and doing exactly the same thing my dad had done, or something
4:17 PM: have just gone from I-89 south to I-93 south,, everyone is kinda flustered and tired
4:24 PM: just paid $2.50 at a toll booth, WTF? auto + 2 axels is $1.50!
4:35 PM: took exit 5, back in Londonderry, YAY!!!!!
4:44 PM: back at the house, now for the tiresome process of parking the trailer...
5:03 PM: Mom going to get dog, trailer is in position
5:08 PM: trailer successfully separated
5:14 PM: trailer has been docked, unloading may now commence

...

tl;dr:

the City of Montreal in the Province of Quebec in the Country of Canada is amazing! check it out! check out the underground city! it's awesome!
